The Setback: I work in a warehouse in a physical capacity. I reached the highest weight I had ever been, had high LDL levels and high blood pressure. Not to mention, I had pain in my back, knees and chronic shoulder pain due to a torn rotator cuff.
The Wake-Up-Call: I did not want to change my job but I physically could not continue to do it. I did not want to take anymore medication, either. I knew I had to make a change to feel better and stronger.
The Comeback: Finding a gym that works for me. Leverage offered Hip Hop Fit and Zumba classes which I chose initially to get me up and moving. I joined Leverage in January 2017 but did not take my first class until March 2017, two months later. I was petfried. Looking back, I have no clue why I felt that way because I found myself going three times a week! I kept a promise to myself that I would show up at least three times a week. Eventually, I expanded into other classes Leverage offered. I had never taken those types of classes before, so to say I was nervous was an understatement. I am proud to say that from taking those classes and also adding in personal training sessions, my LDL (cholesterol) levels have dropped, I’ve lost weight, I’m stronger and I haven’t felt this good since High School! More importantly, I no longer have back, knee, or shoulder pain.
The Workouts: The workouts have given me so much energy. I love how each class offered at Leverage is either 30 or 45 minutes. All the classes are structured properly to provide me with a thorough workout. Although I can’t do a burpee yet, I can do the modification of a burpee, a squat thrust. Burpees, I’m coming for you!
The Nutrition: This is the most challenging aspect for me. I am taking baby steps to not get overwhelmed. For example, instead of eliminating things, I’ve simply added more protein and fruit to my meals. The challenging part is my “sweet tooth”. I am learning I don’t have to give up everything I just need to be more aware of serving sizes and portions. I love that Leverage emphasizes this approach.
The Shout Outs: To my sister-in-law, Annette Smith, who got me thinking about joining a gym. To my husband, Al Smith, who joined me almost a year ago as my gym buddy and makes classes extra fun. My daughter, Taylor Smith, for her constant support. Tim Hlivia, for keeping Leverage innovative and fun. To my trainer, ‘therapist’ and motivator, Erin Tanner. I first met Erin at my first Jacked Ass class where she was taking class next to me giving me pointers. She has had my back and keeps me going. Last but not least, the entire Leverage crew. They are always supportive, friendly and never make it intimidating. Leverage is now a part of my life! Thank you!
Recent Accomplishments: Besides feeling the best I felt since High School, on September 7, 2019 I get to watch my daughter get married!
